I first became aware of my mediumistic abilities around 18 years ago after the passing of my maternal grandmother, who was also a medium. Awareness and communication with the Spirit World runs in my family, with not only my maternal grandmother being mediumistic but also my grandmother’s sister and my mother.

Many people associate mediumship with the ‘occult’, thinking there is something dark and unnatural about what mediums do. In reality, the human race has always communicated with those who have passed from this life to the next. It has often been said that the ‘dead’ are more alive than the living and when you see the state of the world today and the way people are conducting their lives, you cannot but agree at times.

Our ‘spirit’ is forever – it is the part of us that survives physical death and carries with it our personality and our experiences, not only from the life we have just lived but also from other incarnations. When we die, we simply remove the overcoat that is our body and move on into higher and finer vibrations of life. A medium is a person who is able to act as a channel for information from these higher dimensions to those still here within the physical body. By raising her awareness and tuning in to the various levels of spiritual existence she is able to give information using a variety of means. Some mediums work using all three methods of ‘clear’ communication : clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairaudience (clear hearing) and clairsentience (clear feeling or sensing). Others use predominantly one or another. Different communicators in Spirit will also use different methods to put across communication depending upon their skills and knowledge. In a single demonstration of mediumship, a medium can switch from one form of communication to another to another or a combination of them all, depending on the communicator in Spirit and on the person to whom the communication is being given.

All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. By this I mean that a medium develops psychic ability during their development, making them more sensitive but a psychic may not develop an ability to make contact with the Spirit dimensions, only with the life-path and auric field of the sitter. Some psychics are mediums as well, meaning that they can provide evidence of life after death via description of a spirit communicator, their personality etc as well as giving information about a sitter’s life-path. It is important to understand the difference between a pure psychic and a medium or you could seek out the wrong person to help you. If you are looking for evidence of life beyond physical death and a connection with those higher dimensions, then you need a medium. If you are looking for advice on what is happening in your life at the moment and what could be coming towards you in the future, then you need a psychic. If you want a little of both then you need someone who can do both ! It bears remembering however, that we each have many possible futures and many pathways we can take – our future is as much to do with our choices as it is to do with what is mapped out for us in life.

Always remember that mediumship is an experiment. Many things affect the clarity of the information given : the medium’s emotional and physical well-being on the day, the sitter’s energy (positive or negative) and memory / knowledge of their family and acquaintances in Spirit, the ability of the Spirit communicator and the medium’s guides and gatekeeper to transmit the information in a form that is understandable to the medium and the sitter and keep things (and people !) in order, and the atmosphere of the room in which the medium is working. Also, you need to be aware that whilst you may want communication from a particular person in Spirit, you may receive contact from an entirely different person who has an interest in you and particular guidance to offer at this time. There are no guarantees as to who makes contact (we do not ‘call up the dead’ only offer them the opportunity to communicate should they have the ability and the wish to). It can take a long time, in some cases years, for a person who has passed over with little knowledge of life beyond death to make contact due to lessons they need to learn. However, some are so immediately at ease with where they find themselves that they make contact quickly. A strong-willed and outgoing personality is more likely to make a strong and evidential contact than a quiet, withdrawn one (who often needs help from other family members, friends or guides in Spirit to make a contact).

As a medium, there is nothing more rewarding than enabling a person who feels they have lost a loved-one forever, or who is in need of words of encouragement, to receive loving contact and support from that higher dimension. Life goes on eternally, no-one is ever lost to us and we are never alone. The universe and its many dimensions is an incredible place that we have only just scratched the surface of. The more we learn about it, the more we learn about ourselves and the more, inevitably, there is to learn. The knowledge that all of us have eternal life makes a difference to how we live our lives in this moment and if more people had a better understanding of this, then our world would be a more peaceful place to live.
